Oh How Lovely: bookish (part three)

  • Michelle Smiles · 4 months ago
Julie & Julia (the movie) was SO GOOD! I loved it. I didn't read the book but the woman I saw it with did and she said the movie was much better. She Julie was much whinier in the book and Julia wasn't quite as alive.

LOL BLEADERS? Why? I saw the book the other day and now totally convinced I should just watch the movie and skip the reading.

I'm reading the Charlaine Harris books and I love them! Eric is amazing. I'm in love! I can't stand Bill. I haven't watched any True Blood yet, but when I finish the books, that's the first thing I'm doing.

I'm not a huge fan of Sarah Dessen. My favorite author is Francesca Lia Block, but her books are a lot ... different. Haha, that's the only word I can think of right now to describe her writing!
  • Amber · 4 months ago
I did the SAME thing with Julie and Julia! Love the movie though.... I'm reading the last two Charlaine Harris books now. Love them! :)

well I'm so glad I decided to cancel my request at the library for Julie&Julia. I'd read that book wasn't as great somewhere else too, so I'll just be catching it at the theater.

right now I'm reading Best Friends Forever by Jennifer Weiner and it's pretty good. It does have a bit a mystery storyline woven in but I'm not finished yet, so I can't really offer much of an opinion. But she does include a lot of (very) current references, like Twitter and Barack Obama, which I was surprised to see.

I'm reading Loose Girl: A Memoir of Promiscuity.

I tried to start reading the True Blood series, but the books are all checked out so I had to place a few holds and just wait...

    Are you on goodreads.com?

i felt the SAME way about Julie & Julia. I'm a huge memoir fan so i was bummed - because we all know the awesomeness that Jenn lancaster is and how her rise to fame is thanks to her equally awesome blog.

But Julie? Was annoying. Whiny. And I wanted to just smother her with a thousand pillows while reading that book. I haven't seen the movie but i've heard that the Julia Child role in the movie is superb.

I've read reviews about Sarah Dessen but haven't read any of her books, might be more inclined because I love How To Deal (and any movie with Mandy Moore in it)

I just started "The Bell Jar" by Sylvia Plath. We should start a book club.

    And "bleaders" is gross. Ew.

I've read everything Charlaine Harris ever wrote and I love all of it. Her Harper Connelly series is my favorite after the Sookie Stackhouse series.

I recently finished "The Lost City of Z". I don't typically read non-fiction but I thought it was interesting enough. Now I'm in the middle of "Ahab's Wife". It's not a quick read, but I'm curious to find out what happens so I'll slog through.

I'm reading The Embers and Shoe Addicts Anon. right now, and am loving both (although, I suspect The Embers is going to make me cry a lot.

I loved Certain Girls, speaking of crying a lot. I haven't sobbed that hard in a long time.

I read The Cleft last month and didn't really like it. I wanted to stop, but I'm trying to read 10 books by October, so I couldn't stop. I think there was only one that I made it through the first chapter and decided there was no way I was finishing it.

I just finished The Omnivore's Dilemma, which was GREAT, but now I'm on to some lighter fare with Confessions of a Shopaholic. It's fun! Considering I'm also dealing with a financial crisis, it's funny. I also saw the movie, which is very different, but funny. I like both.

I just started Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin and I'm addicted. I love simple cute chick lit and this book is gonna be a great quick read.
I just read Jennifer Weiners latest book Best Friends Forever and I'm just gonna say it...WORST BOOK EVER. I love all of her books but this one was poorly written, had weak characters, and lacked a great plot (like her other books). Also, I felt like I was in an episode of some teen drama that gets solved in the final 2 minutes because the big issues in the book were resolved in the last 5 pages. SERIOUSLY.
Next up...the true blood books :)

I'm attempting to start "Middlesex" by Jeffrey Eugenides for the FIFTH TIME. Here's the problem: I'm totally enthralled for about 20 pages. Then my eyes start to glaze over and I start daydreaming about the perfect boots and before I know it I've turned 4 pages and not read any of it.

I heart Sarah Dessen! She and Meg Cabot are two of my fave female Young Adult authors. Also, "bleaders" is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

Soooo, at home i am re-reading my Marian Keyes books (currently The Other Side of the Story). At work i am trying valiantly at the second time of asking to force my way through Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susannah Clarke. My favourite author series is the Merry Gentry series by Laurell K Hamilton (i also adore Anita Blake) and the Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong. Vampires, Werewolves sex and magic, what more does a girl need?
  • HahnSolo · 4 months ago
I sooo have to recommend The Devil and the White City. Yes, it's non-fiction, but it deals with the strange things that happened during the Chicago World's Fair...Also, everyone (yes, everyone) should read Same Kind of Different as Me. Do it!

I've never read Sarah Dessen, but I hear great things. I'll check her out (haha, did you get my library pun? yeah, big dork right here).

Also, I love the picture at the top of your post :)

I accidentally got the large print version of Eat, Pray, Love (which I'm currently reading). It's...awkward.

I also read Julie and Julia. I didn't HATE it, but I didn't LOVE it either. I'm anxious to see the movie though.
  • Carrie Lea · 4 months ago
Oh thank god. I also hated Julie and Julia. But I forced myself to read the whole thing, because I too hate not finishing books. But the book doesn't get any better. I kept telling myself, something good has to happen, I mean the made a movie out of this book. And... nothing. No drama, no climax, nothing. BOOOO RING. But now I'm reading the Sookie Stackhouse series, which are wonderful, and next I want to read "Italian for Beginners" and "Time Traveler's Wife" Oh, and "The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo."

P.S. I'm back to blogging, and I have a new URL! Come on over! carrieleablogs.com

I'm currently reading "Special Topics in Calamity Physics" by Marisha Pessl, a novel which is not actually about physics so don't be scared! It's a written by a college girl after having found one of her high school teachers dead. She decides to tell the story as a means of catharsis, and I must say it's a page turner! It's a pretty fat book, and I'm only 200-some-odd pages in, but I'm really enjoying it!

Loved all the Sookie books. And I'm in love with Eric. I did a whole post about the show yesterday on my blog. I love it! I also really like Jennifer Weiner. I'll have to get her new one as soon as I can find it!
  • Lauren · 4 months ago
Love Sarah Dessen! I heard Julie & Julia was actually quite meh, so I didn't get around to reading it. From your review - I'm glad I didn't! Ugh.
  • Nora · 4 months ago
I do rather agree with you about the Julie/Julia book but as per our twitter convo about this a few weeks ago I read it so that I could see the movie. I very very rarely will see a movie without having read the book first. Is that weird? Probably.

I'm reading Chocolat right now (Joanne Harris) so I can read the sequel to it, Girl with No Shadow. She also wrote Gentlemen & Players which is a great book (I think).

I am going to start Living Dead in Dallas after I finish Chocolat and I've also started the Wind-UP Bird Chronicles, by Murakami as part of a reading challenge I've joined.

Happy reading, even if it's in large print =)

I'm almost through with the first Sookie book now. I'm totally addicted to True Blood, so I finally gave in & decided to read the books.

I also hated Julie & Julia. I think I got half-way through the first chapter & called it quits.
  • katelin · 4 months ago
haha i'm reading 'julie and julia' as you know and i don't hate it. but i don't love it. it's got that quirkiness to it i sort of like but yeah i agree, something's missing. but man do i want to go see that movie. and then i think next up is "a tree grows in brooklyn", my cousin recommended it and i'm quite curious to read it.

I'm re-reading J&J and I'm not liking it as much as I did the first time I read it, when I got an advance copy from my bookstore job. Maybe I'm just burnt out on sassy memoirs. :(

I have the first Sookie book floating around somewhere, I should actually crack it open! I'm reading a really shitty annoying chick lit book I got for $1 somewhere. Starting a new reading project on my birthday so am trying to get through some fluff before I start the seriousness!

I love Jen Weiner, but NOT Certain Girls or Goodnight Nobody. Boring.

Please try Jen Crusie! Pretty pretty please for me!

I'm almost done Julie and Julia but just cause I adore Eric and secretly hope he leaves her in the end....what? what?
  • Kitty · 4 months ago
Awww. I bummed to hear that Julie and Julia stinks. I loved the movie, and I was so excited to get the book. Normally the books are so much better.
  • LiLu · 4 months ago
I would whoop anyone who tried to call me a "bleader".

    That's right, I said WHOOP.
  • E.P. · 4 months ago
I read Julie and Julia a few weeks ago, and I enjoyed the book all right. It wasn't what I thought it was, though it made me strongly consider becoming a vegetarian in the lobster chapter and made me want to cook some more. I wasn't a fan of the bleader thing, though. Not a bit.

At any given time, I am reading one of the Sookie books. It's so bad, but I'm glad that you agree that we need more Eric. The next book comes out in October, and I cannot wait to see what happens with it!
  • Carissa · 4 months ago
I haven't read any of the sookie books but I do love True Blood, so maybe I should? but then maybe that would ruin the series because I would know what is coming? hmm, I don't know...

I have read some Jennifer Weiner... I have the book that is a collection of stories, I think it is called The Guy Not Taken. anyway, only read a few of the short stories but I liked them. and I have heard good things about Good in Bed so maybe I should add that to my ever-growing list of books to read.

and I am so sad to hear you didn't like Julie & Julia! I picked that up the other day but haven't read it yet. I haven't seen the movie yet either! hopefully I will like the book better than you but that "bleader" thing is weird!

I loved Little Earthquakes and thought Goodnight Nobody was good, but I couldn't really get into Best Friends Forever.

I just picked up After You by Julie Buxbaum yesterday and can't put it down (if you haven't already read it, you should pick up her debut novel The Opposite of Love)!

If you're not already a member of Goodreads, you should sign up and definitely sign up for the giveaways section (early review copies and member giveaways)!

I just finished "The Host" by Stephanie Meyer, and last week I re-read The Far Away Tree books by Enid Blyton, wanted to recapture my childhood. Next on my list is "Chasing Daisy" by an author called Paige Toon. I loved her previous two novels so hoping to like this one too...
  • Phil · 3 months ago
Not that this should be in any way surprising, but I've read Jennifer Weiner! Well, one book: In Her Shoes! Which I loved, just as I adored the movie. Of course.

Currently? Between work, class, and avoiding homework, I've been devouring Chuck Klosterman lately. LOVE him.

I recently got The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind as a birthday gift & am really enjoying it - an adventure with a love story attached. I also enjoyed the Clan of the Cave Bear Series (mature audiences only!) which is about 5 or 6 books I think. Steven King's Gunslinger series were also a good long read. Let me know if you check any of those out :)

I hate not finishing books either
